First Steps in Dental Care an Introduction to Toothbrushes for Your Baby

Establishing a good oral hygiene routine for baby is so important.  Here are a few tips to help you make the process smooth and fun for your little one.

When to Start

The best time to begin is before the teeth erupt.  You can start by cleaning baby’s gums. A soft, damp cloth or gauze pad can be used after feedings.  When teeth appear, use a small toothbrush with soft bristles and gently brush the emerging teeth and gums. (First teeth generally emerge at 6 months).  Ensure the toothbrush is small, easy to handle and maneuver.

How to Brush

·         Use Water:  Initially, it is best to use just water to brush baby’s teeth

·         Toothpaste: After your baby’s 1st birthday, introduce a small dab of fluoride toothpaste (roughly a grain of rice). Increase to a pea size amount by the age 3.

·         Technique: Gently brush in small circles on the front, back and chewing surfaces of the teeth.  Also, gently brush the gums and tongue.

·         Frequency: Try to brush your baby’s teeth twice a day-morning and before bedtime preferably.

Make it Fun

·         Routine: Establish a consistent habit of brushing to help your child develop and get accustomed to the daily process.

·         Engage: Sing a silly favorite song or make one up! Funny faces and rhymes keep everyone engaged and want to brush.

·         Role Model: Make it a family activity.  Brush your teeth together.

Additional Tips:

·         Avoid Bottle in Bed: Never let you child go to bed with a bottle of milk or juice as this will cause tooth decay.  If your child needs a drink, water is always best.

·         Dental Visits: Regular dental care with a professional will help ensure that your child’s teeth are developing properly.  The best time to schedule a visit is after their 1st birthday.
